THE PRODIGAL

“14 And when he (the prodigal son) had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven, and before you,” Luke 15:14-18

There are many a prodigal son whose heart turned back to the Lord and they repented of their wicked ways but they died right there among the swine.

We don’t know the heart of the backslidden who perish in the pig pen. Did their heart turn back to the Lord before their eternal spirit left that mortal coil? No man knows…although many man judges.

The prodigal son arose the next morning and returned to his father’s house. Spiritually speaking, there are many prodigal sons and daughters who are living among the swine as we speak. Many who have been turned over to the devil so that their soul may be Saved in the day of the Lord (1 Cor. 5:5). There are also many of Job’s friends encamped around them doing the work of the devil accusing whosoever will hear. Many are holding a Bible mind you. Many are quite religious and wish to prescribed due penance to the prodigal as if Jesus’ penance was insufficient for those wallowing with the swine.

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” Luke 15:20

The Cross of Christ is just as much for the prodigal son or daughter as It is for those who have never known Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. The prodigals dining with the swine are a result of their heart turning away from God. Dining with the swine did not cause them to turn from the Lord but was a result of them turning from the Lord. Read that again to be clear. It is often the symptom of the heart turned away from God that we witness and to be sure these symptoms are not stagnant as sin and death wreaks it’s havoc in the heart of man.

Before we go about throwing away the prodigals, we best better get the mote out of our own eye as our hearts too have turned away from the Lord yet we don’t see because we are not yet dining with the swine. We must consider ourselves. Are we pointing people to the Cross of Christ and turning them away with our super spiritual, religious attitudes?

Before you give that “Amen”, I don’t mean embracing them while they remain in the pig pen unrepentant and accepting them in their sinful lifestyles but showing them the love of God and letting them know the Cross of Christ broke the power of that sin when they decide to turn back to Him as their Lord and Saviour.

Consider the prodigals. Many are dining with the swine but have not yet realized their condition…but they are someone’s loved one; someone’s daughter, brother, sister, child. Most of all, they are who Jesus Christ came to Saved from a devil’s hell and we MUST consider the condition of their eternal soul before we pass any judgment. If we’re not pointing them toward the Cross of Christ to be set free from the bondage of sin, then we are pointing them toward a devil’s hell.

Jesus Christ came to Save whosoever will believe. He loves them. Tell them the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Don’t let a one; mine, yours or theirs, slip away into an eternal hell without knowing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
