“4 Therefore we are buried with Him by Baptism into Death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His Death, we shall be also in the likeness of His Resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” Romans 6:4-6
Every morning of every day the born again Believer is to deny themselves; deny our intellect, talents and abilities to manipulate the situations at hand and submit ourselves to the finished work of Christ Jesus at Calvary’s Cross. There, where we are buried with Him; planted together in the likeness of His Death and utterly dead to the sin nature which so long reigned in our hearts and lives, is where we shall also be in the likeness of His Resurrection.
Our sin nature has no more dominion because the Spirit of God isolates it’s power when we are buried with Jesus in the likeness of His Death. It is the Holy Spirit alone Who has the power to isolate our sin nature. Will power will not do. Intellectual manipulations will not do. Faith in Jesus as the Source and His Cross as the means is the what gives the Holy Spirit latitude to superintend the work of God in our heart.
In the likeness of His Resurrection we are able to pick up our cross and follow Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit…but we must choose to do so. It is here that Grace flows uninterrupted, even in the most unpleasant circumstances as we deny ourselves; knowing that our old man is crucified with Christ, pick up our cross so that we may walk in the newness of life and FOLLOW Jesus.
The believing sinner is called to believe in Jesus Christ, Who He is and what He has done, and the Saint is called to FOLLOW Jesus. The unbeliever cannot follow Jesus. They may have good intentions but will always and without fail fall. The sin nature still reigns in the heart of the unbeliever no matter their sincerity. It is a struggle within.
To be sure, it is this very same struggle the Believer faces when their faith is placed in various vain philosophies for dominion over their sin nature. They delight in the law of God on the inside but the philosophies they apply to that which they wish to overcome bring them into captivity to the Law of Sin and Death.
“22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the Law of Sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:22-24
Are they Saved? Yes.
Are they bound by the Law of Sin and Death? Yes.
Why? Because their faith is placed in those vain philosophies for the victory in which they seek and not in the Cross of Christ where our victory was won once and for all.
“For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of Sin and Death.” Romans 8:2
The Holy Spirit is not commissioned to free us from the Law of Sin and Death when our faith isn’t placed on the One Who paid the price for our redemption; namely Jesus Christ.
Daily the Believer is crucified with Christ. Jesus was crucified once and His Blood paid the penalty of sin once and for all. We who wish to follow Him; follow in His Resurrected life must deny ourselves daily to follow Him.
“And He said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23.
We must submit unto God’s Redemption Plan so that we may resist the devil and he will flee.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
We don’t do these things daily for Salvation but we do them for Sanctification…we do them in order to follow Jesus; His Will and His Ways and not our own. We are all bent toward the sin nature which ruled in our hearts for so long so we must actively decide daily in whom we are going to follow. As for me and my house, we have decided to follow Jesus…and we’re never looking back.
